HMS Medusa is an obsolete frigate with an ill-assorted crew and an insecure captain. Why has she been dispatched under secret orders to be a sitting duck in one of the most vital ports of the Mediterranean?

Drawn into a close involvement with the Medusa's captain, Gareth Lloyd Jones, ex-adventurer Mike Steele begins a dangerous quest for answers. As past and present combine in a series of violent events, Steele finds himself at the centre of an international crisis to which only Lloyd Jones and the Medusa hold the key.

Hammond Innes was one of my favorite authors. I really enjoyed his earlier works and recommend them to everyone. Medusa was a later work and not as good. It was a "sea story" of sorts (which was Mr Innes' forte). But a lot of the action happened behind the scenes such that I felt like I had missed an earlier book with these same characters. The seduction of Soo by Gareth just sort of happens off-screen. And how close is the protagonist to Petra? His wife thinks they are very close, yet the story doesn't say that. And then the confusing relationship between Garth and Pat Evans took the whole book to resolve, kind of. Of course, I love any book that has maps and there are two in this one. And you need them because the story bounces all around the island of Menorca. Not sure why it was so as it added nothing to the plot. By the time you get to the ending of the book, a lot of stuff that happened is never explained. Or the relevance is never put into context...shooting in Malta?, ...Cala Coves?...why pass the AK-47 around in various hiding spots? Too much left open for my simple mind.

Medusa edition by Hammond Innes Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

It must be so nice to have people reading and enjoying your books for so long. Hammond Innes was writing great books in the 50s. This one was published 1988. He has to be either very old or maybe not with us any more, but his books live on.
Medusa is not his best, a little vague at times, a little slow at the start. And yet it is a good read. With a Hammond Innes book, one can always know that you have good value.
not one of his best
Exciting and a good read. The plot was connected togethor using characters that had normal weaknesses but overcome the human weaknesses to achieve a good finish.
Hammond Innes is the best mystery writer of all time!
A good old thriller written for the sake of the plot instead of to get the money from movie rights. The tension builds steadily with some twists and turns along the way.
Hammond Innes wrote tighly written novels with well researched locations and interesting characters. This is one of his later books and is as enjoyable as his earlier ones. I reccomend any of his books that centre on sea, ships and sailing
OK - This novel would be interesting to some but not many USA readers I am guessing. Same author's " The Wreck of The Mary Deare " is a great sea tale about a large cargo freighter and the surrounding events. Was made into a good movie. Not so far though.
